Her Benny Find!
A tale of Victorian street children with strong Christian overtones, perhaps not surprising as the author, Silas Hocking, was a Methodist minster (in Burnley for a while). The book is short but throughly entertaining and suitable for older people as well as children.
Although not born in Lancashire, Hocking did spend a great deal of time here and it inspired his most enduring works (Her Benny in Liverpool and Chips in Manchester). Hocking holds an enviable claim to fame as being the first author to sell a million copies of his books in his lifetime, far out selling other (perhaps now more famous) Victorian authors.
