Dickens in Preston Find!
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Obviously not Lancashire born but it was a visit to Lancashire which inspired him to write 'Hard Times'. Set in the fictitious 'Coketown' (based heavily on Preston) it tells the story of the plight of the Victorian working class in a mill town. 'Hard Times' is regarded by some as Dickens' best work and a great social critique.
It appears Dickens also wrote a short story inspired by Hoghton Tower, which as a team we are currently researching.
