Cat Lovers

Keiren Phelan from the Arts Council SE attended our Reading Detectives session on 03/09 & steered us towards a poetic association between

Christopher Smart & Wendy Cope.

Christopher Smart was born in Shipbourne in 1722, moved to East Barming in 1726 & was educated at Maidstone Grammar School. His poems celebrate Kentish hop gardens & the beauty of the Fairlawne estate. However, he is most famous for celebrating the many virtues & abilities of his cat Jeoffry in the extraordinary poem Jubilate Agno. I knew that Benjamin Britten had drawn on this poem for the text of his cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, but i'd missed Wendy Cope's exuberant parody, My Lover from her collection Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis.

A Blog titled Waylaid includes text from the Smart & Cope poems. (I did not create the latter Blog & do not endorse the person who did.) http://waylaid.blogspirit.com/archive/2005/07/25/from-jubilate-agno.html

Wendy Cope was born in Erith & her poem On Finding an Old Photograph, (also included in Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis,) is evidence of further Kent connections.)
