Spike Island by Philip Hoare Find!

The subtitle of this book is The Memory of a Military Hospital and it is the story of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley.Philip Hoare's exploration of the military hospital is a fascinating read. Philip was born and grew up in Sholing, Southampton close to the site of the hospital. His detailed research is interwoven with personal memories to recreate this imposing building and its place in both history and the landscape. The hospital was built in Victorian times, served the wounded of both World Wars before finally falling into dereliction. It is brought back to life by the enthusiasm of the author. I read this and was held by a sense of the place and its history; the rich language conjured up pictures, impressions and emotions, not all of them comfortable ones.Between its opening lines 'On a foggy autumn morning in Southampton's eastern suburbs, you can hear ships' horns cutting mournfully through the thick air like sonorous sheep lost in the mist. By night the clank-clank of the dredger takes over, as it gouges out a passageway from the sea bed.....This is Sholing where I grew up.' and the closing ones 'Here, where the blunt stone stump of the hospital's pier falls abruptly away, my journey ends....endless sea,grey-green glittering sea the same the world over, the same water lapping the same shores, watched by the same people. It is only our dreams that are different......It is a beautiful place; nothing ever happened here.' there is a wealth of information and moving stories. Lose yourself in them.
