Some Hampshire road signs read Jane Austen Country Find!

I'm off to Chawton today to visit the Jane Austen House Museum, and here I have to come clean and mention that I have actually worked for the Museum for the last twelve months. July saw the 200th anniversary of Jane moving to the cottage in Chawton which was her home for the last eight years of her life and I have been involved in these celebrations and also the recent work to develop the Museum.

Chawton was the place where Jane prepared for publication of her early novels and where she wrote in their entirety Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. It is said that the village of Chawton and the cottage became the longed for settled home that Jane needed to release her creativity after the years spent in Bath and Southampton which were something of a barren time for Jane's writing. Chawton represented a return to the country landscape and daily routines that encouraged Jane's early writing in the Hampshire village of Steventon, only twelve miles away.

I love Chawton and there is certainly something about the cottage which nurtures. So many visitors comment about the curative feeling of the house and that it also helps them to understand Jane and her writing because of its atmosphere.

I know in terms of detective work it was a bit of a cheat to start with Jane Austen but I wanted to put a small Hampshire village on the Reading Detective map (literally) because the cottage where Jane wrote really is a location worth discovering.
