The poet and the pool..... Find!
David Bell's book "Derbyshire Ghosts and legends" refers to the legend of the Mermaid's Pool near Hayfield..."The mermaid's Pool near Kinder Reservoir is a lonely and desolate place. No fish live in it, no animals will drink from it, and no birds nest near it. But it is the haunt of one wonderful creature....." What really interested me though was the subsequent reference to a ballad by poet Henry Kirke about the mermaid and a further reference traced through the wonderful Google search engine to a book by a Mrs Humphrey Ward who apparently used the legend of the Mermaid's Pool in her novel, "David Grieve".
Next task now is to track down the book and the ballad!
Forward Watson!

Hi Angela, interesting to hear of the Mermaid's Pool. Last year I attended a poetry writing workshop at Whaley Bridge Library led by the poet Jo Bell. It was a very wet Sunday morning but those attending all took a stroll down the canal. When we returned to the library we had to write a poem about what we had seen on our short trip. Strangely, I incorporated a mermaid in my poem, even though I knew nothing about the Mermaid's Pool. Was I picking up vibes from the area? Anyway, I've emailed Will Newman a copy so it may get posted on this site.
Hi Jeremy
Thanks for posting your comment about the Mermaid's Pool. Strangely enough you are not the only one to catch the mermaid vibes in Whaley Bridge - Liz Kessler who has a canal barge in the area has written a series of children's books about mermaids (The Tail of Emily Windsnap).....spooky coincidence or what!
Look forward to reading your poem!
I've found the poem, or most of it, in Derbyshire Traditions by Clarence Daniel, I'll put it on as a find, its quite creepy.
