Stumpy, Hero of the Lakes Find!

I discovered this little book on sale in a local community shop and a few weeks later saw it at Dalemain, a stately home near the shores of Ullswater.  It is described as suitable for all ages from 8 to 80 and, although I bought it with my granddaughter in mind, it has been enjoyed by several of our group.  It tells the story of Stumpy, a red squirrel, who has lost a hind leg and a front paw fighting with grey squirrels who are taking over the Lake District. He meets the heroine, Meg, in Grisedale Forest and with the encouragement of the Old Man of Coniston decide to recruit red deer, ravens, badgers and an eagle to help them in the fight to stop the advance of the grey squirrels to Owlsmere or, as we might know it, Ullswater.  Stumpy is fitted with artificial limbs by Meg's friends to help him tackle the leader of the grey squirrels and the war begins. The battlefield is drawn in bird's eye view at the beginning of the book challenging the reader to recognise the landmarks.

Sadly, in real life the battle has not been won, and the bulk of the profits from this book will go towards helping the native red squirrels to survive.  The book has been written by Tim Cook and illustrated by his wife Pat. Stumpy was based on a real mutilated squirrel who regularly visited their feeder.
