Lakeland in the 1830s Find!

This book by Wendy M Stuart is a transcription of an original manuscript written by her great-great grandfather, Isaac Simpson. It is a daily journal of a journey taken in a horse-drawn gig in the autumn of 1831 from Preston to Keswick. Isaac was originally a clock maker and he opened a watch and jewellery business in Chorley (where another team of detectives is based) but later used his engineering skills in inventing machinery for drawing and flattening wire for use in the cotton and other industries.  He took this expanding business to Preston where he prospered. His trip to the Lake District was partly for business purposes, to look at a Kendal cotton factory and discuss engineering possibilities, but also to take a little holiday. He managed to do a considerable amount of sight-seeing during his short trip and to give a vivid account of the travelling conditions and the hostelries on the way in the diary he wrote for his son Edmond to read.  This has been passed down through the family and came to light again nearly two centuries later. The book is beautifully illustrated with contemporary prints and also drawings by the author. Paintings and photographs of later date show some of the changes which have taken place.  I found the description of Thirlmere before it became a reservoir and the hazardous nature of the road beside it of particular interest.  Anyone who has travelled the easy road from Grasmere to Keswick should read this book.
