A Cumbrian Copper by Ray Huddart Find!

This is a memoir by a policeman who served his time in Cumbria rising from the beat to detective level. The style is a little plodding at times but then one senses an authentic voice and not one that has been 'ghosted' and writing police reports is not the best way to develop literary style. However, there are some nice touches of humour and one can skip over the duller narrative. It does contain some fascinating social history and certainly tracks changes in social attitudes over the 50s to 70s. His observations and reflections at times are quite thought provoking. He does focus rather heavily on his murder cases but then it may be that is what is thought to sell. I was frustrated a number of times at what he was leaving out and wanting to probe. Such is the limitation of books over live interviews. However, I guess he told the story he wanted to tell and the rest is lost to collective memory. The book does shatter any image of a law abiding rural idyll. Serious crime happened here as well as the cities. Policing even in the Lake District is not a job for the faint hearted and that includes me!
