Shepherd's Warning Find!

What  a fascinating project this is, giving us the opportunity to read books about the Lake District of which we were previously unaware.  I have enjoyed 'Shepherd's Warning', a novel by Graham Sutton written in 1946 but set on the west coast of Cumbria in 1745.  It describes vividly the differences between the farming communities and the workers in the iron smelting and mining industries as well as the lucrative smuggling trade.  The setting moves to Lindale where I live, near Grange over Sands, where iron smelting was also carried out and the first iron boat manufactured.  I have been trying to find out more about the author, so far with little success, but have been spurred on to read a lot of local history.

A delightful account of our local area from 1896 to 1903 is given in the illustrated diary of Barbara Sneyd, edited by Phyllida Barstow, called 'Riding High'.  Barbara lived in nearby Finsthwaite with her wealthy family. The diary covers her teenage years spent socialising in the Cartmel Peninsula and going on seaside family holidays to Seascale on the west coast, now dominated by Sellafield as Mary described.

I look forward to hearing about what the rest of the group have been reading tomorrow night.
