Lucky 13!
I work for Cumbria Library Service and I have been co-opted as the 13th member of the Grange over Sands Reading Group for the Reading Detectives project.
As this is such an exciting project I like to think that this is Lucky 13 as opposed to unlucky!
We are all very excited to be involved in the Reading Detectives project. For me it is quite a learning experience - in terms of unearthing local, unknown literary gems, and expanding my reading horizons...and also entering the world of blogging! Whilst I am a regular Facebook user, this is a whole new territory!
So what have I been reading so far? Quite a few poems by Kathleen Jones and Meg Peacocke - both in book form and online - and presently I am really enjoying a novel called Thorstein of the Mere.
It was originally written in the late nineteenth century by W G Collingwood who was an author, artist, antiquary, Norse expert and Professor of Fine Arts at Reading University.
I have discovered today that he was John Ruskin's assistant for several years, working for him at Brantwood in Coniston, and, he was also a friend of Arthur Ransome.
In fact it transpires that Arthur Ransome learned to sail in Collingwood's boat, Swallow. Subsequently in later years, Ransome taught Collingwood's grandchildren to sail in a boat called Swallow II - and directly afterwards wrote the first book in the Swallows and Amazons series, using some of the grandchildren's names for the Swallows characters!
The links which this literary detective work reveals are fascinating!
